Surround yourselves with exotic butterflies at Butterfly Zoo and Hedge Puzzle Maze. Or for the adrenaline-seekers, head to Beechenhurst Lodge and dare to try the zip line, or abseiling! Puzzlewood is also a favourite attraction amongst our guests, let your imagination run wild in the natural playground! There are plenty of activities available at Puzzlewood, so spend the whole day surrounded by the magic of the forest.
The Forest of Dean is the perfect family getaway destination, the kids will be talking about their holiday adventures in the forest for a long time to come!
Learn about the history of this beautiful place
The Forest of Dean is home to some fascinating history.
Why not explore Clearwell Caves? They date back 4,500 years and are also a filming hot spot for the likes of Dr. Who and Merlin! Or visit one of the greatest monastic ruins in Wales, Tintern Abbey, guaranteed to be a peaceful day out in an idyllic setting; overlooking the River Wye.
If the history of the forest fascinates you, be sure to spend the day exploring the Dean Heritage Centre, the kids are sure to love the reconstructed Victorian cottage and schoolroom! You might even be lucky enough to spot the Gruffalo if you look out for him!

Come rain or shine, there is plenty to do in the Forest of Dean for all the family to enjoy. Why not try something new on your forest escape. Get in touch with your creative side and try your hand at pottery making at the Hot Pot Pottery!
Learn about the ancient and continuing tradition of Freemining at Hopewell Colliery Museum and Working Mine. If that’s not enough, don’t miss the chance to explore the forest in style, on a steam train at either Perrygrove Railway or The Dean Forest Railway!
Bask in the beauty of the River Wye
Don’t forget your camera as you climb Symond’s Yat Rock! Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the River Wye below as it winds through the countryside, you might even catch a glimpse of the resident peregrine falcons that nest on the cliff-side in the summer months!
Spend the afternoon daydreaming as you wander along the riverbank on one of the many footpaths, or try exploring the area from a different angle, in a canoe, as you gently float down the river! Ensure you leave time for lunch or a riverside drink at the wonderful Saracen’s Head Inn, which we highly recommend!

A great way to understand something of the character of the Forest of Dean is to take a whistle stop tour of its four market towns. Each offer something different, from Cinderford’s industrial heritage to Newent’s quaint black and white buildings.
Coleford, the Forest of Dean’s oldest and main town, is a thriving market town, popular with tourists; and Lydney, situated on the banks of the Severn has a surprising maritime heritage.
